Sorry I don't have an easy solution but this is what I did to get rid of ivy and St John's Wort. I wanted to plant some grapes and I am running out of sunny spaces in the yard. The spot in front of the garden was perfect except for the ivy and St John's Wort that had invaded. I cut down the foliage with a hedge trimmer and went to work with the pick axe and shovel. I used my Diggit Duck (the orange handle tool that looks like a duck)to dig up the roots that were embedded in cracks and in the hard pan.
I then put in some metal flashing to block the weeds from coming back into my wine garden and then we sifted the dirt to remove the rocks and roots and voila! A new weed free garden area. Now all I need is the trellis and gate.
For sifting we used our new Sifit, it is our newest Diggit product. It is a rotary compost sifter that is light and portable. We are still in the design process but we will have them available soon. For more information go to www.diggitinc.com
We hope to incorporate an optional motor but I can use the exercise.
